In August, 2005, we started implementing the ELL project in the city of Piraí (RJ). Through this partnership, the Sequoia Foundation provides training and monitoring for teachers in public city schools, who are appointed by the City’s Education Office to participate in the project, and supplies all the classroom material required for their development.
The ELL has already been implemented in five Piraí schools, and it is still expanding in the city, serving both pre-school and elementary school students.
According to the model used in Piraí, in February, 2006, we began the implementation of ELL in the city of Rio das Flores (RJ), where our project has evolved along with our students.
We started out working with students from pre-school to the first grade, and currently work with students from kindergarden to the fourth grade.
In August, 2007, we began implementing the ELL in the Walter Russo City School, in Duque de Caxias (RJ). This marked the beginning of a partnership that, for us, makes the perfect example of a sustainable and successful project.
:: Schlumberger, a leading service company in the Oil and Gas Industry, finances the materials and operational costs of the project;
:: the city’s Education Office provides the required support and makes teachers available for the implementation of the project;
:: the Sequoia Foundation provides training for teachers, implements the methodology, and monitors the project development.
One of our goals is to offer our children daily contact with professionals who speaks fluent English, providing them with knowledge about American culture for effective language learning.
In order to achieve that goal, we have established a partnership with the Fulbright Commission, which, as part of the English Teaching Assistantship program, selects young American college students to come to Brazil and participate in ELL.
These youngsters contribute to the improvement of Brazilian teachers’ knowledge of the English language, participating in classroom activities along with students, and lending their skills to several areas of the project.
