In August, 2005, we started implementing the ELL project in the city of Piraí (RJ). Through this partnership, the Sequoia Foundation provides training and monitoring for teachers in public city schools, who are appointed by the City’s Education Office to participate in the project, and supplies all the classroom material required for their development.
The ELL has already been implemented in five Piraí schools, and it is still expanding in the city, serving both pre-school and elementary school students.
According to the model used in Piraí, in February, 2006, we began the implementation of ELL in the city of Rio das Flores (RJ), where our project has evolved along with our students.
We started out working with students from pre-school to the first grade, and currently work with students from kindergarden to the fourth grade.
The partnership to implement the project of bilingual English teaching in the city of Quissamã began in February 2009, in three city schools. Two of them are full-time, in which students take English classes every day.
In 2010 the project was expanded to a total of seven city schools. All pedagogical staff, school teachers and English teachers receive ongoing support and professional development.
The city also receives regular visits from international and national consultants with expertise in literacy and bilingual education, which support professionally the project participants.
Through the project, the city also has the presence of an English speaking teacher who works in schools with students and teachers in developing their communication skills in English.
In 2011, Sequoia Association and AIESEC established a partnership that will bring foreigners to Brazil to work on our projects. The aim of this partnership is to improve teachers and students’ communication skills in the English language, in addition to assisting us in the development and implementation of new projects.
